Refinishing my buffet

0 By Kim

I have known for a while I wanted to refinish my hand-me-down vintage buffet cabinet. I just kept putting it off. Until one day when I started cleaning out the drawers I thought… I really should just bite the bullet and re-stain it. So, here goes.

The materials I used:

Varathane Stain in weathered gray

Varathane Satin polyurethane

Palm Sander

Sandpaper

New pulls

Here is my solid wood buffet. I honestly couldn’t figure out what kind of wood it is. So all of this is going to be trial and error.
Its all marked up and old. I would say its probably from the 60s.
I started sanding using a palm sander…this was quite time consuming. And messy. I ended up pulling the whole piece into the garage.
All sanded! I thought about maybe choosing a stain close to the color of the wood, but I really wanted gray stain, so I stuck with my original plan.
I stained the doors to see the color, which I did like, but they had to be re-sanded and stained again because the stain didn’t stick to the sections I didn’t sand well enough. I had to do the edges with sandpaper.
I only did one coat of stain and wiped it off right away. I didn’t want it to sink into the wood unevenly.
This is the product I used for the finishing polyurethane coat.
The finished product! I bought some new pulls to complete the update.
Definitely an improvement.
